Best Arizona Daytrips from Gilbert
While there are a number of places to enjoy the outdoors in Gilbert, there are also a number of destinations tucked in the desert where you can enjoy local fare, arts and entertainment, and learn a bit about Arizona history.
Here are the best Arizona day trips from Gilbert:
Jerome – Located between Prescott and Sedona, Jerome is a former copper mining town turned artist retreat and local getaway. It’s also known as Arizona’s largest ghost town but I’ll let you decide if it’s haunted or not.
Prescott – Arizona’s original state capital, Prescott offers arts and theatre, hotels, bed and breakfasts, shopping, and nightlife including live music along the famed Whiskey Row.
Sedona – If you’ve never seen the red rocks of the desert up close, you need to plan a trip to Sedona! Located two hours north of the Valley, Sedona offers breathtaking scenery, luxury resorts and spas, art galleries, and wineries.
Apache Trail – The most scenic drive you can take from the east valley to copper mining town of Globe, the Apache Trail includes Tortilla Flat, the last surviving stagecoach stop along the trail, Roosevelt Lake, Superstition Mountains, and the Tonto National Forest. It’s 40 miles of paved, steep, winding road through desert forests and lakes.
Boyce Thompson Arboretum – If you’re thinking of getting to Globe (and you should. It’s the best Mexican food in the state) via the US 60 freeway from Gilbert, make a stop in Superior at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Check their calendar for events and guided walking trail tours.
Cave Creek – The laid back western lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle, wildlife habitats, dramatic views, art galleries, shopping, restaurants, golf, and hiking are what makes Cave Creek one of the best Arizona day trips from Gilbert.
Saguaro Lake Desert Belle Cruise – Have you ever thought you could go on a cruise in Arizona? Originally launched in 1964, the Desert Belle is the oldest continuous tour boat in state. See the Sonoran Desert like you’ve never seen it before! For more information, visit http://www.desertbelle.com/.
Hiking Trails – Looking for the right trail for your level of expertise? Check Hike Arizona (http://hikearizona.com/) for reviews and tips of hundreds of miles of trails throughout the Phoenix area and state. Favorites include South Mountain, McDowell Mountains, Dreamy Draw, Hieroglyphic Canyon, and Peralta Trail.
There’s no shortage of things to do in and around Gilbert, that’s for sure!
